Project Description:

The Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) project works to educate Library and Information Science (LIS) masters and doctoral students through practical field experiences in research and data centers. This project is a joint partnership with the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and the University of Tennessee – Knoxville.

Together, the two institutions, provide LIS students with the experience to real world applications of scientific data curation, meeting the demands of an emerging and complex field. The two institutions work with the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to address the needs within the data curation of scientific data and engage in the development of sustainable models for LIS student education in this field that provides extensive field experiences into the education process.

The University of Tennessee provides the education for the DCERC students. For information on the DCERC doctoral component at the University of Illinois, please contact Virgil Varvel at

Project Abstract:

New data skills are critical to the progress of 21st century science to ensure that data are properly selected and stored and can be readily discovered, accessed, and used over time. The Data Curation Education in Research Centers (DCERC) program will establish a model for data curation graduate education that enriches students learning and expertise through onsite training at a data intensive scientific research center. Doctoral students will conduct research and masters students will develop as professionals in the real world of research, guided by both science and data mentors. DCERC is also aligned with research and development activities in the current NSF DataNet projects, providing students with opportunities to interact with working groups and learn first-hand about R & D advances and outcomes.
